Everyone looking to purchase an ebook reader essentially must choose between wanting an E-Ink screen or a color touch screen, even before they start looking at brands. Here are the pros and cons of each type of screen and how they may be a benefit or detriment to your needs.
The E-Ink Screen Ebook Reader- Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo, etc
Touch Screen Lcd
Pros-
1) Eye Strain- E Ink was designed to mimic paper reading and causes little eye strain compared to back lit screens.
2) Low Reflection- E-Ink reading screens have the reader fighting less with reflections than back lit LCD screens. Reading on these devices in direct sunlight are much easier to see than LCD screens.
3) Battery Life- E Ink screens only use power in the instant that the page is turned and the text is initially displayed. It doesn't require any power to keep the text on the screen once it has been displayed. The LCD screen requires power at all times to keep the text visible. Therefore battery life of eInk ebook readers is much longer than LCD color touch screens, often having many days up to one month of battery life on one charge compared to a number of hours up to 1 day with LCD's.
Cons-
1) Sluggish Navigation- Reaction time of pushing buttons and navigating screens aren't very slow per se, but the act of having to use buttons to scroll to where you want is a slower process than the touch and swipe options we are getting used to on other personal electronic devices.
2) No Color- There are E-Ink screens that have already been developed with color capabilities, but even those just cannot compete with the vibrant displays on LCD screens. Grayscale screens on the Nook, Kindle, Sony Reader and Kobo all have 16 different shades of gray that are displayed. LCD color screens can show up to 6 million different colors.
3) Touch Screen Inadequate- Most readers that use EInk don't even attempt to use a touch screen, but some Sony Reader models do. These are great devices, but the reaction time and capabilities of the touch screen are lacking compared to LCD screens.
4) Night Reading- One must use a light to read these screens at night, as they are not back lit.
Back Lit Touch Screen (LCD) Ebook Readers- Tablets and Nook Color
Pros-
1) Color- Obviously the color is a big draw for consumers that buy these devices. Full color reading is very important to those who like to read magazines, newspapers, blogs and other publications that rely on getting the point across with pictures.
2) Touch Screen- Not all touch screen devices are created equal by any means, but the fact that it is a color touch screen creates a connection between the reader and content that is intimate compared to pushing buttons to navigate.
3) Night Reading (low lighting)- External lighting is not required to read these devices at night or in low lighting situations.
Cons-
1) Reflections and Fingerprints- This is something that catches a lot of people by surprise when first using a tablet pc or LCD touch screen ebook reader. Reflections and fingerprints in bright sunlight make reading extremely difficult.
2) Battery Life- Battery life is shortened considerably for back lit devices. Time between charges is measured in hours vs weeks.
3) Higher Price- Pricing is higher for LCD touch screen devices.
It ultimately comes down to what the customer wants in an ebook reader when choosing which kind of screen, E-Ink vs Back Lit color touch screen. For novel readers, a gray scale screen will be just the ticket, for those who want a little color, LCD is the way to go.
