Many of us are contemplating the purchase of a High Definition Television this winter. One of the main reasons to buy now is the upcoming Super bowl football game. We like having friends and family over to watch the game, and what could be nicer than to see it on a new large screen TV. As long as we are upgrading, why not get High Definition as well. But what to buy? With today's fast technology changes, how can we make a wise investment? Some things to consider would be screen size, where will it go in the house, and will you buy a particular brand to show off -or will cost be a factor in your decision? What about the different types, Plasma or LCD? Who will deliver it, and who will install it correctly?
First, let's take time to measure where the new TV will go. I had a friend plan on a very large screen size to fit inside an enclosed credenza. When we examined the TV he wanted before purchasing it, we discovered that it needed a minimum of 4" around the sides and from the wall for proper ventilation. He had to be satisfied with a smaller TV. Positioning the TV on the wall gives you a much greater option for space. Be aware of sunlight from windows blinding your view. Keep in mind the safety of the TV. Large screen TV's can become a big target for hands, feet and flying objects. Most warranties do not cover abuse.

Brand decisions can be extremely costly. However, with sales and online price comparisons, you can save more from a discount TV store. If you buy a new TV, you will still get the full warranty and accessories, just as if you purchased it from your local department store.
LCD seems to gain popularity over a Plasma TV and you won't have the recharging worry in the future. Both have a great picture, the higher 1080p resolution being the most expensive. The 720p and 1080i models are also very acceptable, providing they have a good contrast ratio. Most TV's sold today come with a manufactures limited warranty for one year. You can buy additional warranty policies that cover beyond the original manufacturers warranty even if you have purchased from a discount TV store.
You can bring it home yourself, but keep in mind that most manufactures recommend that you keep the TV upright during delivery. You will need the right vehicle to accommodate this. If you are mechanically inclined, you can install the required brackets for a wall installation, but I would recommend having a friend help you lift or move the TV in order to do it safely.
You now have a pretty good picture of what to expect when buying and installing a large screen HDTV. Proper planning for the location, screen size, cost, type of screen, and the installation, will save you in the long run. Shop around, go online, check the discount TV stores and get some comparison pricing for your best buy. You can save time and money by making the right decision.
